LOW VIZ BIZ #14 — FALL 2001

Where We've Been

For a group of visually impaired people, we really get around!

In July we visited the San Antonio Lighthouse and William Judson Center to view their latest computer technologies and purchase low vision aids. And by the time you receive this newsletter, 40 or so of our members will have taken a bus trip to Austin to visit the Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center as a follow up to our June program.

In other meetings, we've discussed ways to become "Ambassadors for the Blind", and learned about the latest research and treatment of eye diseases from leading ophthalmologists and low vision specialists.

Where We're Going

Oct. 20-A special program on all types of "Safety", developed and presented by our Northwest Satellite Support Group under the leadership of Pegie Gonzalez.

Nov. 17-A discussion program on "Caregivers", moderated by Leslie Hoy.

Dec. 8-An early Christmas party and luncheon at Laurel Heights United Methodist Church under the leadership of Special Events Chairperson, Josefina Miller.

Game Day

Our Northwest Satellite Support Group also conducts a "Game Day" on the last Saturday of every month at the Hungry Horse restaurant, 12333 West Avenue, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. They play card games, dominos and Scrabble. Call Pegie Gonzalez at 493-9272 to get on their calling list.

Bingo

Speaking of games (and thanks to Vice President Bob Hobson), the San Antonio Low Vision Club is now sponsoring Bingo games and nine-line machines on certain days of the week at "Ten Cent Bingo", 229 SW Military Drive. Our sponsored sessions are on Sundays and Tuesdays from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., and on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 10 p.m. Adela Aguilar from our club is in charge of this project.

Memorials and Donations

Although revenue from Bingo will help the club's treasury, our lifeblood is your donations and memorials. A memorial to Dina Barry was received from Roberto and Emma Villegas. Also donations were received from Jean Schiffman, Harold Sanders and an unnamed donor who paid for the charter bus to visit the Criss Cole Rehabilitation Clinic in Austin. Since the club is a 501c(3) non-profit corporation, all such donations are tax deductible, and very much appreciated.

"Ambassador for the Blind" Buttons

If you missed signing up as a club volunteer and did not receive your "Ambassador for the Blind" button, you may do so at our October meeting. Hilda Scott will take your name at a table just beyond the sign in table, and give you a button.

Tape Exhange Library

Also at that same table, club member Maxine Thorword will be acting as librarian for an exchange of cassette tapes. Bring in cassette tapes of magazines, books, etc. that you no longer need, and exchange them for other cassettes you would like to hear.

Library Link

Dan Stanford of the San Antonio Public Library has given us a computer link for their current DVS titles. Log on to: http://www.sat.lib.tx.us/html/descvid.htm.

Newsletter on Cassettes

We continue to provide these newsletters on audio cassettes to those who request it. The newsletters are read by volunteer Ken Jones, former instructor in the English department at San Antonio College for 30 years. He also read our entire Resource Guide onto tape. When he is not reading for us, he enjoys his garden, photography and world travel. The tapes are recorded and duplicated by club member Ed Brown. If you want an audio cassette instead of a printed copy of the newsletter, call Ed at 735-1802.

Resource Guide

Our San Antonio Low Vision Club Resource Guide is being reprinted thanks to the Founder Lions Club and member Carol Morrow, who arranged with her company, Government Personnel Mutual Life Insurance Company, to do the work for us without charge.

Personal Bill of Rights

As you requested, here is the "Personal Bill of Rights" presented by Leslie Hoy at a recent program. It is adapted from The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook, Edmund Bourne,Ph.D. I have the right to ask for what I want, say no to requests or demands I can't meet, express all of my feelings, positive or negative, change my mind, make mistakes and not be perfect, follow my own values and standards, determine my own priorities, not to be responsible for others' behavior, actions, feelings or problems, expect honesty from others, to be angry at someone I love, feel scared or say "I'm afraid", say I don't know, my own needs for personal space and time, be playful and frivolous, make friends and be comfortable around people, change and grow, have my needs and wants respected by others, be treated with dignity and respect, be happy!!

Career Fair

A Career Fair for Job Seekers with Disabilities will be held October 25 in the Fiesta Pavilion of the Adams Mark Hotel. It will be hosted by the National Business & Disability Council from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. To register to attend or for more information, please call (516)-465-1520.

Radio Reading Service

A special committee from our club is working behind the scenes to develop a Radio Reading Service for San Antonio. It will be carried over a sub-channel from KSTX Public Radio. Primary need at the moment is a place from which to office and broadcast. We need a space approximately 30 feet by 30 feet which can be subdivided into 4 areas. If you know of such available space, please call Club President Bonnie Truax at 344-1479.
